January in the Veg plot

A cold January, but there are many jobs that need do in and around the Veg plot with things to get ready for spring, as its not long away now!

So what needs doing…

General Jobs

If you have not already done so, all leaves and other rubbish must be cleaned up from around the plot,

Things to Plant

On mild days you can start to plant out Garlic, Onion sets and Shallots towards the end of the month.

Things to Harvest

Continue to lift and store root veg like Carrots and Beet as they best if they have been brought in by now. But the likes of Parsnips and Leeks are best with frost on them so leave them out until you need them. You can also pick some spring cabbage as winter greens too.

Fruit

Finish winter pruning Apple and Pear trees as well as Currant and Gooseberries bushes, when the weather is frost free.

Don’t forget you can still do hardwood cutting of Currant and Gooseberries bushes that you want from the off cuts.

Time is also running out to move any fruit plants around the veg plot so this need to be done soon.

Vegetables

Lift and divide Rhubarb crowns now and prepare some for early forcing and a good mulching will them too.

Pest and Diseases

Even at this time of year the slug can be around so keep an eye for them!

Mice can also be a problem at this time as they are short of food and will look for your stores to attack so keep an eye out for them.

Birds too and be a pain as they get hungry taking buds off of plants so look after them as well as putting net over plants to protect them.

Look for Canker in fruit trees.

So have good time it the Veg plot and don’t get to cold

January in the Flower garden

Even in January there are many jobs that need do in and around the garden and things to get ready for spring as its not long away now!

So what needs doing…

General Jobs

If you have not already done so, all leaves must be cleaned up from around the garden,

And don’t forget to set up protection for alpines from wet weather as they can be damaged or die off if they get too wet.

Annuals

On wet or days to cold to garden start thinking about get the seeds in for summer bedding.

Perennials

Continue to cut down last years growth and clean out leaves from autumn as well as lift and divide plants that have got to big.

Trees & Shrubs

Finish cutting back trees and shrubs in the garden when the weather is frost free. But remember that shrubs like dogwoods (cornus) that are used for winter colour can be left until March, as well as the spring flowering types such as ‘Forsythia’ can be left until they have finished flowering.

Don’t forget you can still do hardwood cutting of shrubs that you want from the off cuts.

Time is also running out to move any trees and shrubs in the garden so this need to be done soon.

Lawns

Warning! Don’t walk on your lawns when they are frozen as it can kill off patches that you stand on.

Even at this time of year grass can still grow when it’s above 5C (40F) so in warm periods you mite need to give it a cut. But don’t forget to cut it 5-8mm(1/4in) higher than normal.

Pest and Diseases

Even at this time of year the slug can be around so keep an eye for them!

Birds too and be a pain as they get hungry taking buds off of plants so look after them as well as putting net over plants to protect them.

So have good time it the garden and don’t get to cold

Christmas Tree O’ ‘Real’ Chrstmas Tree

It’s that time to put all Christmas things away, But what are you going to do with the Christmas Tree.

It’s nice to have a real tree for Christmas and with about 8 million being sold in the UK this Christmas. But now its all over what do you do with it apart from burn it in the garden or put it in the bin! Well there are some things you can do :-

  1.
  2. If you have a plant shredder, you can put the tree through it and use the chips around the garden as a mulch, or in the compost bin as a break up for the grass clipping from last summer.
  3.
  4. Most councils will take trees in at there main recycling centers and waste tips to chip up and use around your city in parks ect.
  5.
  6. Or if your local Zoo will take them, again to chip them up and use them in the animals cages and around the Zoo.

So you can see a chistmas tree is not just for christmas but can be used again.

But a thought for next year you can buy a living tree in a pot and after chistmas give it to a woodland trust, or if you have a very big garden you can plant it your self and pay back a little co2

Compost bins

Every garden needs a compost bin and at this time of year they are needed more then ever. There are many types to choose from and you can even make one yourself (this project coming soon).

So what can you put in your compost bin?

Well from the kitchen you can put in:

  • Peelings including cores and pits
  • Egg shells
  • Cut flowers
  • Coffee grinds and tea bags
  • Spoiled fruits and veg

And from the garden:

  • Leaves (that are now piling up around the garden).
  • Dead plants and weeds including bedding plants.
  • Hedge clippings
  • Grass cuttings.
  • And more… (clicking this link will also give you a list of items not to add to your compost)

Now a common issue with adding grass clippings is the smell. To stop materials like grass cuttings from going all gooey and smelly, I mix in shredded paper from the office and/or sticks that I have shredded up so the air can get in and stop it going smelly and help it rot down.

Another way to decrease the smell of composts is to have a lid on you bin and make sure it is well fitted. This prevents excess moisture form getting in from rain but also helps the smell from permeating outside the bin.

Also remember to put your bin somewhere it is easily accessible, with a decent amount of sun, on flat ground, not too close to the house.

It can take 12 to 18 months to rot down before you can start to use it around the garden. Additions such as sticks and larger plants will take longer to rot down but using a plant shredder will help this.

If you’d like more detailed information on all the aspects of compost bins and composting, I recommend visiting www.recyclenow.com.
